Beggiatoa (2024)
Beggiatoa is a bacteria that grows on the seabed of dead zones. White patterns, resembling spider webs, cover the ocean floor. Like a visual landmark it indicates that you have entered the dead zone area. It grows exactly where the oxygen dissapears and toxic sulfide starts to form, because it needs both for its metabolism.
‘Beggiatoa’ is a floor installation, consisting of sandblasted glass plates and steel stands.
The sandblasted pattern is extracted from photos I took while diving in a Dutch dead zone (Grevelingenmeer) and shows the Beggiatoa bacteria.

See more of how it was presented during UNFAIR 2024, click here.
The steel stands in this installation were designed by Johannes Equizi.
Diving assistance by Dennis Monnereau.
The ‘Beggiatoa’ installation has been supported by Amarte Fonds.
The ‘Dead Zones’ project, which ‘Beggiatoa’ is a part of, is supported by the Fentener van Vlissingen Fonds ‘NATUURCULTUUR’ award, Mondriaan Fonds and Stroom Den Haag.
